Post-Harvest Fertilisation: Why it’s Important: Post-harvest fertilisation plays a crucial role in replacing nutrients and building reserves for the next growing season.  It is one of the most important fertilisation periods and should be applied in two phases—approximately half of the planned application immediately after harvest and the remainder 2–3 weeks later.

Key Considerations

  • Soil Type and pH: South Africa has diverse soil types and pH levels.  Keep these factors in mind and choose the appropriate fertiliser range  to ensure optimal nutrient availability.
  • Age and Health of Vineyards and Orchards: Younger vineyards or those under stress may require a more targeted approach.
  • Nutrient Removal by Harvest: Post-harvest fertilisation should focus on replenishing reserves depleted during the growing season and harvest.  Ideally, all nutrients removed should be replaced.  If this is not possible, fertiliser quantities can be adjusted and reduced, but they should never be omitted entirely.

When planning post-harvest fertilisation, the soil fertility status and the crop’s potential demand for nutrients the next season should also be considered.

Certain practices can enhance the plant’s ability to absorb the nutrients. For example, the use of organic components such as Bio Ganic or bio-stimulants like Ocean Nutrition (Fish Hydrolysate) can contribute significantly to root development, improving nutrient absorption.
