May 9, 2024Atlantic Fertilisers offers successful post-harvest fertilisation programmes: It is time to start planning for post-harvest fertilisation.Â
Post-harvest fertilisation is applied to replenish nutrients that were removed during the growing season and the development and ripening of the harvest. Â It also ensures that sufficient reserves will be available at the beginning of the new season.
Â
The plant stores these post-harvest nutrients as carbohydrates and utilise them during spring, for example, during the periods of bud formation in vineyards and flower development in fruit trees.
During this growth stage, there are no leaves present that can provide nutrients and energy to the plant through photosynthesis. Instead, the plant is relying on the reserves stored during post-harvest fertilisation.  For a successful start to the new season, it is recommended to apply sufficient post-harvest fertilisation as required by the specific crop.
Careful planning is needed regarding which products, the quantity, and when they should be applied.  The soil fertility status and the vigour of the crops are taken into account, as well as the yield that was removed, to determine the amount of post-harvest fertilisation needed.
Furthermore, attention should be given to applying adequate irrigation to ensure the uptake of nutrients. Â
